چکیده

Six degrees of separation is a well-known idea that any two people on this planet can be connected via an average number of six steps. Having succeeded in the real world, the theory even directly or indirectly motivated the invention of online societies. However, no much effort has been paid on checking if the theory really holds for online societies whose connection pattern may not be identical to the real world. This paper tries to give an answer to the question by both mathematical modeling and online measurements. The mathematical approach formulates the problem as a Minimum Diameter Problem in graph theory and evaluates the maximum and average values of the number of connections between any two random-selected community members. Measurements are conducted in three different kinds of online societies, namely ArnetMiner for academic researchers, Facebook for students, and Tencent QQ for teenagers in China. Analysis of these measurements verifies our theoretical findings. KeywordsSix degrees of separation, social network, minimum diameter problem, small world

Topology and Geometry of Online Social Networks

In this paper, we study certain geometric and topological properties of online social networks using the concept of density and geometric vector spaces. “Moi Krug” (“My Circle”), a Russian social network that promotes the principle of the “six degrees of separation” and is positioning itself as a vehicle for professionals and recruiters seeking each others’ services, is used as a test vehicle.

Design and Fabrication of an Improved Single-Column Chromatographic Separation Process

In this work, an improved single-column chromatographic (ISCC) separation process is proposed. The term `improved' refers to both conceptual and physical modifications compared to the available single-column processes, including a novel fraction collection scheme and allowing overlapped peaks from adjacent cycles. Also the fraction collection mechanism was modified in order to facilitate online...

Evolving Inverse Fuzzy Models for Uncalibrated Visual Servoing in 3D Workspace

In this paper, evolving inverse fuzzy models obtained online for uncalibrated visual servoing in 3D workspace, are developed and validated in a six degrees of freedom robotic manipulator. This approach will recursively update the inverse fuzzy model based only on measurements at a given time instant. The uncalibrated approach does not require calibrated kinematic and camera models, as needed in...

Degrees of separation on a dynamic social network

Social networks are nowadays the most prominent online environments for communication and interaction among individuals, that allow people to communicate more often. In fact, in recent years, most studies have concluded that we are more close now, with the number of degrees of separation becoming smaller for most social networks. These networks are nevertheless continuously changing and evolvin...
